Dog or Cat Not Eating? A 2-Minute Vet-Reviewed Guide

Pet appetite loss is one of the top reasons pet parents call the vet — and for good reason. Whether it’s a dog not eating their kibble or a cat not eating for 24 hours, the tricky part is knowing when it’s a picky-eater “food tantrum” and when it’s a real emergency. Getting that call wrong can cost precious time.

Know the urgency by species and age:

  • Cats: A cat not eating for 24 hours needs a same-day vet call — no exceptions. Cats can develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) frighteningly fast.
  • Dogs: A healthy adult dog can be monitored for up to 24 hours if there are no red flags.
  • Puppies and kittens: Any missed meal is a same-day assessment — hypoglycemia risk is real and rapid.

Red flags that mean go now: lethargy + pale gums, vomiting paired with diarrhea, a hunched posture, or a swollen belly in a large dog (possible bloat/GDV). Senior pets (8+ years) losing their appetite should always be seen promptly — dental disease, kidney disease, and cancer are common culprits.

Safe things you can do at home right now:

  • Gently warm the food or add a splash of low-sodium broth
  • Observe gum color (pink = good; white or gray = emergency)
  • A short sniff walk can sometimes re-trigger appetite in dogs

Never force-feed your pet or reach for human medications — ibuprofen and similar drugs are toxic to both dogs and cats.

If you’re wondering why won’t my dog eat or your cat has gone quiet on meals, trust your instincts and get informed.
